Beyond Hello
Oct 29, 2025Hi, how are ya?
Fine. How’re you?
Great.
Great.
Too many leaders pat themselves on the back for having “connected” with their employees by engaging that way. You know, I’m allergic to the terms “employees” and worse, “staff.”
You as a leader have team members. You’re leading people and connecting with people who are giving up part of their lives to serve the success of your projects.
Success is a series of steps, deliberate steps.
Values drive your decisions.
Your vision represents your desires.
And no one attains success without the assistance and support of others.
If you want deliberate success, you’ve got to create deliberate connection.
Beyond “hello” or “hi, how are ya,” what do you know about the people you’re engaging with?
Think about the last person—outside of your home—that you had contact with yesterday. Who was it? A team member? A grocery store cashier? A food delivery person? Get the person clearly in mind.
What color were their eyes?
What did you notice about their smile?
What else do you know about them?
Human connection takes practice. It’s a soft-skill lost art. And yet, when people feel seen, they’re more likely to remember you. That’s an important leadership lesson.
Success is intentional. Connection, real connection is intentional. Beyond “hello,” make it a point to find out three things that matter to the person you’re talking with. It could be the project they’re working on, their last meal, or something going on in their family. How will you find out what matters? Take some time. Ask. Savor the response.
Keep making your magic.
