What You Select
Oct 14, 2026I’ve been using the term “select” (as in, to make a selection) vs. “choose” recently.
We have so many options in the world.
In my first book, I wrote a chapter called, “Overwhelmed By Choice or Overwhelmed, By Choice.” That comma makes a difference. Do we have so many things to choose from that we’re overwhelmed? Or are we choosing to become overwhelmed?
Something to ponder.
How we contain that overwhelm is a matter of where we put our attention. Think about going to a restaurant. When you’re offered a menu, there are certain things you’d order and certain things you wouldn’t.
Personally, I’d never order liver and onions. Depending on what else was available, I might go for the seafood linguine.
The bottom line is that you’d select something that you want.
Here’s the part you’re missing. Once you make that selection, you’d never focus on what you don’t want.
You look forward to what I want.
The dinner you ordered is coming.
When I place my order, my mind never goes back to thinking about what I deliberately didn’t order. I don’t give any attention to hoping they don’t serve me liver and onions.
So what about the menu of life? So many people are so focused on what they don’t want, it’s almost like they don’t see what else is on the menu that they could order. “I don’t want pain, I don’t want debt, I don’t want relationship turmoil.”
Focusing there is like repeating “I don’t want the liver and onions” over and over again, so when the waiter comes, all you blurt out is “…liver and onions.”
What if you were focused on the things you wanted? Wouldn’t you see more opportunities to “order” them up for yourself? Your restaurant selection would change so that the offerings were pretty specific. You’d get clearer and clearer about what you wanted and you’d steer clear of what you didn’t want.
I select great health, abundant wealth, and great relationships. I select ways to serve others greatly. Yes, other items are on the menu. Once I’ve made my selection, I don’t pay attention to them.
In my MindState® work, I would often ask my clients, “What do you truly desire? What would you treasure?” I know that in my previous Wednesdays with Wayne blog posts, I’ve suggested those questions for you.
I’m exploring a twist on that approach, and I’d love for you to explore it with me over the next few days.
The question:
“What do I select from this menu?”
Let me know how that approach changes the way you think.
Keep making your magic.
See you here next week!
